Waves with momentum
A damped wave equation carries each splash across the pool, where crests and troughs spread, overlap, and follow the duck's gentle wake without changing the pool's total water volume.
EXPERIMENT 001 · PHYSICS & GRAPHICS
A small study of light and moving water. Drop a ripple, push the floating sphere, change the wind, and watch a little duck paddle around the pool.
Pick up and drop the sphere, or tap the water to make a ripple
UNDER THE SURFACE
A damped wave equation carries each splash across the pool, where crests and troughs spread, overlap, and follow the duck's gentle wake without changing the pool's total water volume.
Push the floating sphere, watch the duck paddle, or drop a stone to send waves across the pool. Wind feeds in smaller disturbances between splashes.
Moving wave normals bend bright highlights across the reflective surface, revealing the pool tiles underneath.
This is a real-time surface-wave approximation, not a full fluid or ray-tracing simulation. Disturbances are balanced against surrounding troughs so the pool's mean water level stays constant. It is a work in progress—part physics experiment, part rendering study.
